Spent the last two days at Sax-zim Bog at different times. On Saturday I was there at dawn but the weather was terrible for birding and guiding! I managed to pull a Hoary Redpoll out of the bog along Stone Lake Rd yesterday. Other than that saw several flocks of Snow Buntings and lots of Bald Eagles. Today in the bog I was there mid day and the weather was better but gusty winds from the west. No owls but managed to locate two Ruffed Grouse, Rusty Blackbird, Snow Buntings, Gray Jays, Rough-legged Hawks and Northern Shrike. With all the activity in the woods and traffic along the roads the birding was rather dull because of deer hunting season.
In Lake County along the Stoney River Road at dawn we found lots of White-winged Crossbills, redpolls, heard only Boreal Chickadee and a lot of Gray Jays. Other than that, it was very dull but I wonder if this lack of birds was more weather related because it was sleeting, misting, raining and snowing on us with gusty west winds.
Going back to the bog for the last day of guiding. Three days of guiding and the weather looks more promising tomorrow.
